So, I’ve decided I’m going to start wearing all tangerine in honor of Blackpool’s victory over Cardiff City over the weekend. And it’s not really because I like Blackpool, even though Gordon Ramsey filmed a Kitchen Nightmares there, but really just because I like the color.

Look out world.

Here’s what’s happening at Canvas this week!

FREE CINNAMON ROLLS. 4 PM. Monday. Come by this week for some of our freshly baked, sugar-packed cinnamon rolls. Take a much needed break from revision, sleeping, partying… whatever… and hang out at Canvas for a little bit today!

TUESDAY NIGHT LITE. 8 PM. This is the last Tuesday Night before our End of Year Banquet (sign up for the dinner please!) next week. Come and enjoy the evening with all of us as we eat dinner, listen to the Canvas band, and hear a great talk from one of the canvas staff about his Christian faith. Because it’s the last one, we might do a little something special… you should come to find out!

THURSDAY NIGHT. BBQ. 7 PM. Just like every week this term, we’re “pulling out all the stops” and are doing the best BBQ in Selly Oak. Come eat a burger or two, have some delicious sides, and hang around for………..

OPEN MIC NIGHT! 8 PM. We’ll eat some burgers, sit around and chat, then listen to some of Selly Oak’s finest artists. I heard Brooks and James practicing earlier today and I have to say, it was music to my ears (sorry). So, come eat some free dinner and stick around for some good music. If you want to play on Thursday night, sign up here: http://www.facebook.com/l/f7941;openmic.canvashouse.org.

END OF YEAR BANQUET. Next Tuesday Night is Canvas’ End of Year Banquet when we’ll reminisce about the year gone by and honor our graduating Canvasers. Please sign up on the door in the green room at Canvas if you plan to attend!

See you around this week!

Thanks to everyone who came out and enjoyed the first day of sun we’ve had in a while. Summerpalooza was a success and we discovered a few things about ourselves:

Matt Huniak only eats good cheese… not 70% cheese.

Tom ivey can’t catch and eat an ice pop at the same time.

Claire Parlby should join the University kick-ball team.

We eat a lot of beef burgers.

I hope everyone’s exams are going well and that most of you are still alive! Here’s what’s going on at Canvas this week:

FREE CINNAMON ROLLS. MONDAY. 4 PM. Every week, now that we’ve perfected the recipe, we bake an enormous amount of cinnamon rolls for your eating pleasure. We know you are spending a lot of time revising these days, so take a break and come down to Canvas today at 4!

TUESDAY NIGHT LITE. 8 PM. Just like last term, every Tuesday night, we eat dinner, listen to the band play some good stuff, and hear from one of our own Canvas staff members talk about their journey through the Christian faith. This week, because you have exams to get ready for, the same things will happen, but we’ll end the night a little earlier than before. I hope you can make it!

FREE BBQ. THURSDAY. 7 PM. According to Olly, we’ve officially “pulled out all the stops” on Thursday nights. I might have to agree with him. Every Thursday, we grill burgers, eat some delicious sides made by Leah and Alli, and enjoy each others’ company as we all take a break from the week and hang out at Canvas. Come eat some free dinner!

That’s pretty much what’s happening this week around Canvas. In the afternoons from 12-2, we’ll be handing out free tea and coffee outside Canvas for people on the way to or from Uni. Come by and grab something to drink if you’ve got the time.

See you soon!

I hope you all are enjoying this time of being under a hung parliament… I didn’t know what to expect, but I have to say it’s not as bad as I thought. Select and Save is still open and Friends is still on TV every time I turn it on.

The world is going to be okay… and here’s what’s going on in and around the Canvas House this week:

FREE CINNAMON ROLLS. MONDAY. 4 PM. There’s this thing we like to do lately that I think is one the greatest ideas we’re ever had. Every Monday @ 4, we bake cinnamon rolls and give them out for free! As much as I look forward to a couple left-over treats, I’d rather you get the chance to experience all that are Canvas cinnamon rolls! Come by tomorrow and take a break from revision.

TUESDAY NIGHT LITE. 8 PM. Every week, as you’ve probably noticed, we like to eat together, listen to wonderful music from the Canvas band, and listen to a great talk. Well, this Tuesday, it’s happening again and we’re very excited that our very own Brooks Tellekamp will be sharing with us his experience in England, in life, and in faith. Dinner starts at 8 and we’ll close Canvas around 10 so you have the chance to go home and revise! See you there.

FREE BBQ. THURSDAY. 7 PM. Last term, we grilled burgers in the afternoon and hung out at night while we ate soup. That was great and everything, but this term, we’re grilling a copious amount of burgers with salad, crisps, biscuits… the whole works! Take a break from revision, get out of bed, leave the library and come eat a burger with us at Canvas this week!

SUMMERPALOOZA! SATURDAY. 12 PM. This weekend, we’re inviting everyone who’s ever been a part of, inside, or around Canvas to come to Selly Park at midday to have a BBQ for lunch, play in the 1st Annual Canvas Kickball Game, and spend the afternoon hanging out with each other. It’s the perfect way to forget about Uni for a while and reunite with the Canvas community. I hope everyone can make it because it’s going to be the best day ever!

That’s what happening this week. Come by on your way to or on your back from Uni and grab some tea or coffee… You can try to beat Finerty in ping-pong. The house is open (and relatively quiet) for you to come and do some revision during the day.

See you all very soon!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and that you are getting a lot of work finished! Here’s what’s happening this week:

FREE CINNAMON ROLLS. MONDAY. 4 PM. Each week during the term, we’ll be baking some delicious cinnamon rolls to give you a nice break from the revision. Alli says she has perfected the recipe, but if I were you, I’d come by and judge for yourself… Take a break from the library, from in front of your laptop, or get out of bed and come hang out for a little bit at Canvas tomorrow afternoon!

TUESDAY NIGHT LITE. 8 PM. Similar to last term, we’ll eat a good, warm meal, listen to music, and hear a talk. But, things will be a little bit quicker, and you’ll get the chance to hear from the Canvas exchange students about their experience in England, in faith, and in life. This week, our very own Katie Edenfield will be gracing us with her words. I hope you can make it. We’ll be kicking everyone out of the building around 10 so you can go revise and not fail your exams… so don’t worry about not getting your work done.

THURSDAY NIGHT BBQ. 7 PM. If you enjoyed the Thursday afternoon bbqs… and found yourself eating at Canvas on Thursday nights, then you are in for a treat! Because we’ve combined both of those wonderful events into one amazing evening. Each week, we’ll fire up the grill, cook some burgers and sides, and sit around and eat together. Again, take a break from revision and eat a free dinner at Canvas.

That’s pretty much what’s going on this week. The doors are open every day for you to come in and do some revision, drink some tea or coffee. I should also say that if you haven’t signed our exchange students’ flags, this would be the perfect week to do that.

Hope to see you soon!

This Week at Canvas: Prom on Sunday Night!

Welcome back everyone! I hope you had a relaxing time away from Selly Oak… or at least were able to get a lot of work done.

You’ll never believe what happened a week or so ago. Turns out, some volcano up north exploded and sent ash flying all over the place. And some people got got stuck all over the world spending money to sleep in a bed and spending hours in airport queues…

…I’m not bitter…

But, luckily, that Icelandic volcano won’t be effecting all that is happening at Canvas this week. Here’s what’s going on:

MONDAY. FREE TEA AND COFFEE. 8:30am. Every day this week from 8:30am to 10am, we’ll be serving fresh and free tea, coffee and a breakfast snack in front of Canvas. You can stop by and take it all with you. It’s a great way to get some energy before tackling you’re busy day.

MONDAY. CINNAMON ROLLS. 4 PM. If there’s anything that you need after a long day in the library… or after a long night’s sleep… is a warm, sweet cinnamon roll. Every Monday during this term, we’ll be baking fresh cinnamon rolls for the first 50 people who walk through the doors… So, be sure to come by and grab a snack while you take a break from work.. or video games… or sleeping… See you at 4 tomorrow! (Don’t know what cinnamon rolls are? Check this out.)

TUESDAY NIGHT LITE. 8 PM. Because quite a few people have work to do and are revising for exams that are fast approaching, we will be having a lighter version of Tuesday Nights each week during this term. This week, we’ll eat at 8, listen to some great music, and hear from our very own Emily Desprez. She’ll talk about her faith, about her life, and reminisce on a wonderful year here. We’ll close Canvas pretty early so you can go home and get your work done… and if you want, some of us might be going to the pub… Hope you all can make it this week!

THURSDAY NIGHT BBQ. 7 PM. We’re combining the best of what Thursdays have to offer and forming an almost superhuman event. Each week this month, we’ll be cooking burgers and chips for dinner on Thursday nights. We’ll eat at 7, hang out for a bit, and if anyone needs to, they can go revise after a nice hearty meal. Come by for a burger, some chips, and a break from Uni.

CANVAS PROM. THIS SUNDAY, 2 MAY. If you haven’t already, hurry to your nearest charity shop and purchase your clothes for Sunday’s Prom. Tickets cost £5 and all money goes to the Mexico house-building trip in June. You can come by any time this week to buy your ticket… The Canvas Prom will be held at the Rowheath Pavillion in Bournville and we’ll give directions on Tuesday night.

Re-cap: CANVAS PROM. SUNDAY NIGHT. 8 PM. £5. Refreshments sold on the night.

That’s what is happening this week! it’s gonna be a great term. As always, the house is open each day with hot tea and coffee available. Because it’s a time when everyone is revising, we’ll be turning Canvas into a study location. We’ll try and be as quiet as possible so you can get your work done… I promise!

See you soon!

Some of you might be asking, “What am I going to do this week?”

Even more of you are probably asking yourselves, “What am I doing on Tuesday of this week?”

And even more of are saying to yourselves, “I wish Canvas was doing something so fun there’s no way I would ever decide not to come.”

Well, for all of you, I have something exciting to tell you.

THIS TUESDAY NIGHT. 8 PM. WE’RE HAVING OUR FIRST EVER CANVAS VILLAGE FÊTE! If you’re someone who has no idea what our version of a “fête” is, let me tell you what’s going to happen.

Free dinner at 8, Sumo wrestling, balloon animals, hook-a-duck, welly wanging, bean-bag tossing, candy apples, barn dancing, face painting, and a 6 foot man eating chicken! It’s going to be the most fun you’ve had since the weekend away, I promise.

Also, you should wear your best flannel shirt… we’re barn dancing after all…

We’ll see you at Canvas on Tuesday Night @ 8 PM. There’s no better way to celebrate the end of the term!

And just a reminder, we’re having our weekly BBQ on Tuesday this week just to get everyone in the mood for some good old fashion barn dancing. It’s from 12 to 2. Hope you can make it!

See you soon!

If your Saturday night was like mine, you were sat in a comfy seat in a large room on the second floor of the Guild, watching the finest dancers from Selly Oak and Edgbaston shake, spin, and twist around on stage for a few hours. There were flashing lights, explosions, pyrotechnics, and a crowd of people on the edge of their seats.

I’ll admit, the dance groups were pretty good, but I’ve seen Matt do things on a dance floor that no one else could ever do! And, on that note, here’s what’s happening this week at Canvas:

OPEN MIC NIGHT. MONDAY. 8 PM. This is the last open mic night of the term, so I suggest you get your instruments and your voices and come down to Canvas to show off your talents. Even if you don’t sing, dance, or play music, you should come and enjoy some great entertainment. We’ll have dessert, too! Hope to see you there. (Sign up to play at openmic.canvashouse.org)

TUESDAY NIGHT @ CANVAS. 8 PM. This week, we’ll eat some delicious Mexican food in honor of the Canvas students going to build a house there, listen to some great music, and finish our talk series about the Father and his Two sons. We’ll start eating at 8 and we’ll head down to the pub when we’re all finished. Hope to see you there!

FREE BBQ. THURSDAY. 12-2 PM. Come by Canvas to grab a burger and hang out around the house with some cool people. We’ll be cooking ’til we run out of beef, so stop by on your way to or from Uni!

SOUPER THURSDAY. 7 PM. It’s still pretty chilly in the evenings, and there’s no better way to satisfy a cold and hungry stomach than a warm bowl of soup and oven-baked bread. Every Thursday night, we eat together and hang out around Canvas, go to the pub… really anything our hearts’ desire. Come by at 7 to fill your stomachs and hang out with some cool people.

FRIDAY IN THE PARK. 2 PM. Come to the park at 2 on Friday to play some football, frisbee, or whatever other sport you can think of. I showed everyone how to play football last week. You should start calling me Pele…

That’s what’s going on this week! And as always, the doors are always open for you to come study, drink some free tea, or beat Jen Waghorn in Ping-Pong.

See you soon!

I thought instead of telling you what you already know: that Tuesday Night @ Canvas is on tonight at 8pm. And that there’s a free BBQ @ 12 on Thursday. And SOUPer Thursday at 7:30. Instead of all of that, I thought I would remind all you wonderful people that there is a weekend away to Wales this Friday to Sunday!

The cost is £35 plus helping pay for the petrol to get there. If you’ve already signed up, please pay Canvas because we need to pay Cefn Lea Conference Park. Talk to Alli about that stuff.

Tonight, we will sign up for transportation to Wales (who is leaving when and in what vehicle) and we’ll talk about what you need to bring (so you don’t freeze in the middle of the night or get your favorite Gucci sweater dirty by the campfire).

So, to clarify. This Friday to Sunday. Weekend away. Cefn Lea Conference Park in Wales. £35. It’s gonna be amazing. Let us know if you have any questions.

See you all soon!

Maybe it’s because I’m an American that this effected me so much, but I recently stayed in a hostel in Manchester, England that advertised “breakfast served 24 hrs.” I couldn’t believe my eyes! I was going to eat bacon for lunch, sausage for dinner, and maybe some black pudding for dessert.

I waited until I was hungrier than just hungry and I walked into the breakfast room at about 9 am on Saturday morning.

I saw some tables with butter and napkins laying on them. I got to the breakfast table where there was a toaster and 5 loaves of bread… and an electric kettle.

Major disappointment.

If you want something that won’t disappoint (See what I did there?), here’s what’s happening at Canvas this week!

TUESDAY NIGHT @ CANVAS. 8 PM. This week, we’ll listen to the Canvas band play some great music, eat Mexican food in honor of the students going there to build a house, and Jason Tatum will be talking a little about his journey through the Christian faith. It’s gonna be a great night. Dinner starts at 8. See you there!

FREE BBQ. THURSDAY. 12-2 PM. Come by Canvas this week to eat a burger, play some ping pong, and sit around with some really cool people. Hopefully there will be enough 70% cheese for everybody! See you there.

SOUPER THURSDAY. 7 PM. I was watching it snow yesterday and all I kept thinking was, “I wish I had some delicious soup.” Well, on Thursday, I’m hoping I start thinking the same thing because Canvas is heating up some soup and bread for whoever wants to come eat! We’ll start eating at 7, then hang out at Canvas, go see a film, or go to the pub… anything our hearts desire! Hope you can make it!

MANVAS. FRIDAY. 6 PM. We’re lighting up the bbq and throwing whatever meat you bring to Manvas on top of the flames. We’ll eat manly things and play video games on some big screens in Canvas for a few hours. It’s gonna be awesome! Spend some time practicing your Halo skills, pick a good slab of beef, and come down for Manvas on Friday night!

And as always, the doors to Canvas are open all week. So come by to do some work, drink some tea, or hang out with us.

OPEN MIC. MONDAY. 8 PM. If you’re the type of person who only sings in the shower, or you’re somebody who flourishes on stage, all of you are invited to Monday night’s open mic night. Bring an instrument or your voice. Or, if you just want to come and listen, you’re more than welcome. It all starts at 8. Click here to sign up to play.

TUESDAY NIGHT @ CANVAS. 8 PM. PANCAKES. This week, just like every week, we’ll eat a delicious dinner. But this time, we’re having a fantastic pancake dinner! So, come listen to some great music and hear a talk from one of the Canvas staff members about his journey through the Christian faith. Dinner starts at 8. And we’ll head down to the pub around 10:30 or so. Hope to see you there!

THURSDAY BBQ. 12 PM. Every Thursday, from 12-2, we grill burgers outside Canvas for whoever wants a free lunch! Come by this week to eat, play some ping-pong, and hang out around the house for a little while.

SOUPER THURSDAY. 7 PM. There’s nothing better than a warm bowl of homemade soup on a chilly night. Because of that, Canvas is heating up huge pots of soup and tons of bread to fill your cold stomachs. We’ll eat at 7, hang out around Canvas, go see a film, go the pub… really anything our hearts desire. Hope you can make it!

FRIDAY. 2 PM. Every Friday afternoon, some people get together at Canvas to play some crazy game. These guys from Georgia Tech have some interesting ways of playing the sports you and I have known and loved for so long. Hope you can come see what I’m talking about.

The doors to Canvas are open all week with coffee, tea, and WIFI available. Come by and say hi, come and study, or just come by and beat someone in ping-pong.

Hope to see you all soon!
